Director Skansen gave Ambassador Karntimon a tour of the Deichman library, the newest library in Norway, which was opened on 18 June 2021 after 10 years of construction. It has a collection of 500,000 books and can accommodate 2,000 visitors at the same time and is expected to have 2 million visitors each year. The library is well-designed for both architectural and services aspects. It is constructed in an environmental friendly manner by using all recycled materials. The cooling and heating system is controlled by the internal tube using the water from nearby Fjord. Natural lights and sound system are carefully crafted to give atmosphere of welcoming and openness. It is designed to be more than a reading place or focusing on the books alone. It is meant to be a place for learning and exchanging of ideas. It offers various digital literacy space such as 3D printing, laser-cutting, podcast producing. During the COVID-19 pandemic, this library reduced the number of visitors but produced more interesting podcast and live TV programs to the public.
Ambassador Karntimon presented the library with FRIHET FRA ALT UBEHAG by AJAHN ANAN from Phra Ajahn Sindre Ashito, Bodhibhumivana temple in Lillehammer, STILLNESS FLOWING: The Life and Teaching of Ajahn Chah, from Ajahn Kalayano of Lukuttara Vihara (Skiptvet monastery), and ON MEDITATION: Instructions from Talks on Developing Formal Meditation by VENERABLE AJAHN CHAH, and NOW IS THE KNOWING: Buddha, Dhamma, Sangha, Anapanasati, Happiness, Unhappiness, Nibbana by AJAHN SUMEDHO from the Embassy. All are books on Theravada Buddhism of Thailand following the teachings of Ajahn Chah which have been selected and requested by the library in coordination with the Thai Embassy earlier.
Future cooperation between the Embassy and the Deichman library was discussed including Thai food cooking demonstration at the library to promote Thai food in Norway.
